Paulaner Brauhaus

Hello (:

Marking season has commenced and I'll not be as active as I would like to be on this blog and I suspect that my entries might be shorter than usual, but I'll do my best to post some photos when I take a break from work so that cobwebs won't gather here =D

Last weekend, I went to Paulaner Brauhaus to celebrate my belly good friend's birthday and boy was it a FEAST! There was just SO MUCH MEAT and there was free flow beer so I would highly recommend their Sunday brunch to all carnivorous and beer-guzzling friends/ people (: What I liked most about Paulaner is its chillax atmosphere and the fact that there aren't many diners so it wasn't as noisy/ crowded as the other lunch/brunch places. It's definitely worth a visit when you are ravenous but otherwise, you might want to give it a miss. There was plenty of other non-meaty stuff for me to eat too so I left feeling full and satiated as well (:

Here are some photos taken last week during brunch:

Alright it's late and I should head to bed. Have a great weekend everyone! (:

Dates with Friends

Hello (:

I've most been going back to the same places for meals partly because the food served gives me simple joy and comfort (: So here are some snapshots of the food that I've been eating recently, most of which I've posted on instagram! (:

Date night at Chili's rocks

And we tried Coca Steamboat at Taka - it was not bad (:

Timbre at Substation with close friends (: The live music was nice.

We really love going to Vegan Burg. Thank goodness for an outlet near our place.

P.S. Cafe never fails to satisfy either.

And Brotzeit! I still miss the pancakes at Paulaners but I think the food at Brotzeit is pretty good (:

TGIF! (: Back to school! (:

Brotzeit

Marking makes us hungry.. very hungry. This post shall be dedicated to our pre-marking outing to town, where we ate a hearty meal to cultivate a relaxed mood and positive mindset so that we will be clear-headed and fair in our marking (:

From left to right in a clockwise direction: Wurstelplatte ($32.50), Salad (Schupfnudeln) ($14.50), Spatzle ($5). The salad was surprisingly good and the spatzle kept me full.. (: Spatzle is something like pasta except that it tastes more flour-y and buttery. Good dish to order if you're a carbo queen like me =D

Alright time to have dessert! (: Will post more photos of marking-food when I'm taking a break from marking (:

Werner's Oven

Hello! (:

I shall post about my trip to the east this afternoon since I've decided to give myself a break before I move on to do other stuff!

A few of us went to Werner's Oven this afternoon to celebrate one of our friend's/ colleague's birthday and it turned out to be one of the best places I've been to for small group meet-ups. Werner's Oven isn't a big restaurant, it's more like a homely cafe (see photo above) and it is relatively quiet on a Wednesday afternoon. Apart from us, there was only another couple dining at Werner's and just before we left, another girl came along to dine here. Don't be mistaken that their food is terrible just because they have very few patrons at lunch! It actually is the opposite because Werner's serves very authentic and good German food! (: In fact, it is so good that it's worth going back again in the near future! (:

We started off with the Wurstplatte for 2 ($48), which is a Sausage Platter that has a few type of sausages:  farmer's, weisswurst, smoked, nĂ¼rnbergerle. And these sausages are served with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes & German bread. The sausages were neatly and efficiently sliced up and were quickly consumed so I am guessing that they had to be pretty good (:

I think this plate of stewed potatoes and vege is an extra side dishes from one of our mains featured in the other photos.

The famous Knusperiege Schweinhaxe ($21.50), aka crispy pork knuckle served with mashed potatoes & sauerkraut, was the dish that we had anticipated and went all the way to the East for. The skin of this pork knuckle is fried till it is crisp and it crackles when cut! We ordered two of these and both were de-fleshed by the time we were done with them. I guess they had to be REALLY good! (: On my part, I especially LOVED the mashed potato and couldn't help getting more servings of it from the different plates with mash on them. The mashed potato did not have an overly milky texture nor was it too buttery so it was perfect for me! (:

They also shared  the Ox-tail Stew ($21.50), which contains big chunks of ox-tail stewed to perfection served with a buttered roll. This was also readily and heartily consumed by all (except me) at the table (:

Of course they didn't forget to order a fish dish for me and I had the Breaded Fish & Chips served with green salad ($14.50). To my surprise, the slices of fish were much thinner than expected but I must commend the chef for making the breaded fish fillet less oily than most I've had prior to this. I think this portion size of fish and chips is just enough!  (But I ate a lot of mashed potato before this dish came so my comment might not be totally accurate). Nevertheless, it should be enough for a person with average appetite.

In all, I enjoyed my afternoon with friends and I do hope to go back to Werner's again to try other dishes. What I was also very happy with is that Werner's actually has a bakery just next door that sells fantastic tasting bread! I bought the oatmeal bread loaf home and am already looking forward to having some oatmeal bread for breakfast tomorrow! (:

Alright that's all for now (: Hope to update again soon!

Have a great rest of the week! (:

Brotzeit

Hello!

We finally had one alfresco dining experience together! I'm not too keen to dine outdoors in Sg because I always feel that it's uncomfortable, especially for people who perspire very easily. Though I don't perspire easily, I feel uncomfortable seeing that they're so warm! =S Although my friends tell me that they're fine with perspiring and what not, I just cannot help but feel very uncomfortable when I see them perspire so for that reason, I seldom dine outdoors.

I guess that's why our trip to Brotzeit on a Saturday night was quite a new experience for me because I think it's one of the rare times I got to eat outdoors. We got ourselves a table outside of Brotzeit and though it was absolutely packed, it wasn't warm or stuffy at all! Maybe it's because we were sitting nearer the entrance/ pavement where there's more ventillation but whatever it is, I was very happy with our table! (:

One thing that I've learnt about Brotzeit from my few trips there is that their servings tend to be generous! Not Chili's generous but generous enough! This tall and big glass of iced cappuccino ($6.50) was easily enough for both of us! Thankfully they provided sugar syrup so we could make our drink slightly sweeter if we wanted to.

We started with a bowl of Onion Soup ($9.50), which was one of the best onion soups that I've drunk! I rarely drink onion soup because my impression of it isn't too good but this was pretty perfect(: The dry rye bread complemented this perfectly too.

Our shared mains because we weren't too hungry that night - Nurnberger ($17.50). I like that they allowed us to choose our own sidedishes! Their mashed potato is fabulous! You should order it if you're a mashed potato fan! We chose their 'pasta-like' side for our other side dish and I liked it quite a bit though it was pretty tasteless! haha I guess I really am a carbo-laoder!

Part of the reason why we didn't want to get another main was because we wanted to save our tummy for this ultra filling dessert - shredded fluffy raisin pancakes with rum and raisin sauce ($12.50)! (: Honestly this could have been better served warm but the pancakes were just SO fluffy! haha It wasn't the soft kind of fluffy but I liked it! We managed to finish all of it and were stuffed to the brim after that!

I truly enjoyed the entire outdoor dining experience (: With great food and great company, what more can one ask for! Life always seems better when there's good food (:

Have a blast this weekend!

Paulaner Brauhaus German Micro-Brewery Restaurant

Hello everyone! (:

I'm feeling quite happy that it finally rained just now, after many days of unbearably hot weather, because for once I don't feel like I'm being assaulted by the heatwave. Yesterday was quite an eventful day because my sister had her commencement ceremony (congrats Nette!) and I attended my first wedding dinner in a long time! (: I guess yesterday's wedding marks the first of the many upcoming weddings that I'll have to attend in the near future. I've somewhat concluded (might be a bit too hasty though since I'm only basing my conclusion on last night's dinner) that wedding dinners are great times for people to catch up with one another because you've about three full hours to talk to the person/ people you're sitting with! (: I'd a great time talking to the person next to me and am thankful that I'd such great company yesterday.

Because I heard that some of my fellow CCA people are going to visit Brauhaus at Novena this coming weekend after CCA and also because my family went to Paulaner Brauhaus German Micro-Brewery Restaurant at Millenia Walk not too long ago to celebrate my other sister's birthday, I'm going to post an entry on German food today!

Paulaner at Millenia Walk is an extremely HUGE restaurant that spans three storeys, with the first being a pub/ bar and the second and third being dining areas. We were lucky to be seated away from the noisy post-work pub-crowd, on the second level, where the ambience was actually quite peaceful and nice for a family birthday celebration.

I was quite pleased that my entire family was game for German food that night (much thanks to Nette's recommendation) and I think most of us (except Jeff my brother) enjoyed what we ordered.

We were served three different types of warm bread (yum!) with butter and some other kind of spread which I've clearly forgotten! I loved the texture and taste of the slices of bread and I think that it's lovely that they were not stingy and gave us two such portions since there were so many of us at the table!

Every time I visit a German restaurant, I feel compelled to ask my fellow diners to try their sausages since german sausages are famous for being extremely tasty. We ordered two different types of sausages - the currywurst (pictured above) and the nurnberger (second photo) - and each dish costs $17. The people who ate the sausages took to them well and I think all of us liked nibbling on their above-average-tasting fries which were made slightly nicer because of the sauce that came with them.

Another signature German dish that one should try to order is the pork knuckle ($29.50). I think the portion was reasonable for its price! My parents felt that this pork knuckle was pretty okay but it wasn't as fragrant as they hoped for it to be so I guess if you're a pork knuckle fanatic, try not to get your hopes too high for this dish!

One of my sisters decided to order the Caesar Salad ($14) because none of the other dishes enticed her. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Caesar Salad came in a nice tall bowl! (: I think presentation affects our impression (and sometimes goes so far as to colour or judgement) of the dish and this caesar salad was definitely well-received by my sister!

The same sister who ordered the salad also placed an order for a bowl of mushroom soup ($9) which tasted much better than the usual mushroom soup! It's definitely worth a try (:

My brother ordered the Cheese Spatzle ($14.50) which was actually egg noodle in cream sauce that tasted slightly alcoholic. Before we took a spoonful of his noodles, we were wondering why he didn't like it because we actually made it a point to order PLAIN cheese spatzle for him since he doesn't like any condiments but after we took our first bites, we realised that there was a hint of alcohol in the cream sauce, which explains why he didn't like his food! We did some swapping so that we would finish his dish for him and he could eat some potato rosti ($13.50) and ham pizza ($20). The rosti and pizza arrived the latest and by then, we were all too engrossed with our own food and hence we didn't take any photos of these two dishes - sorry! My mum said that the rosti was nice so I think you can give it a try if you're not into having sausages when you visit Paulaner!

If you wish to play on the 'safe' side, you can always take after Jeffrey and order the Chicken Sausage ($16). This dish comes with two side dishes: mashed potato as well as german cabbage. It's actually pretty filling so it's just nice for people who like to have a 'well-balanced' meal that consists of carbohydrates, fibre and protein!

I ordered their fettucine ($18) which tastes much better than it looks. I thought the fettucine was just right because it was still a little springy and it helped to bring out the flavour of the sauce well. I very much liked this dish (:
Since no one in my family's into beer/ alcohol, we didn't order any proper drinks but we did, however, order overpriced soft drinks and other beverages. Each cup of softdrink costs $7 so you can imagine how much money we spent just on drinks! =S

On the whole, I thought that the food, service and ambience at Paulaner's were above average and they definitely superceded my expectations (: I think I'll go back again in future to try other dishes and maybe to listen to their live band on level 1! (:

Alright that's all for today. Have a great week ahead! (:

Brotzeit

Hello! (:

Sorry for the lack of posts recently! I was away at camp during the week so I couldn't update this space. Anyhow, I'm taking a break from my Saturday morning class for a term so I can FINALLY sleep in on Saturday morning! (: Whoopee! It felt GREAT waking up at 9am instead of the usual 8am today! Kind of explains why I'm in such a hyper state! =)

I'm going to post about our recent trip to Brotzeit (at 313 Somerset) because the food that we had that day match my sunshiney mood right now (:

This is the entrance to Brotzeit! Can you spot the door which you're supposed to open to get into the restaurant? We were stumped for 2 seconds before we realised that the door's camouflaged! If you go in through this entrance, you'll arrive at the 2nd storey of Brotzeit!

As you can see, the 2nd storey is pretty empty even on a Saturday afternoon so it's definitely a great place to chill out over brunch food and drinks.

Because Jeffrey and I aren't beer guzzlers, we opted for a glass of sprite and another glass of coke ($4 each).

Soon after, we were served with these two rectangular, compartmentalised dishes that contain three different types of sauces for our various dishes. There's mayo, ketchup, chilli sauce, mustard and some other brown paste which I'm not sure of. I actually tried all 5 sauces and they taste relatively okay, nothing too offensive to the taste buds.

We've heard that their french fries ($6.80) are really good so we ordered a plate to share. This bowl of fries is definitely sufficient for 2 to share so don't try to over-order, especially if you're not big eaters! The fries taste slightly like cajun fries but I'm pretty sure it's not covered solely with cajun powder. Whatever it is, the fries were good and they were a great starter to our meal!

This bowl of complimentary salad comes with our two main dishes. As you can see, the bowl is overflowing with greens and I'm pretty sure that this amount of vegetables is sufficient to fulfil the 2servings of veggies per meal guide so people who are trying to adopt a healthy living type of lifestyle can also dine here.

I went for the Ruhrei Lachs ($16.50), which is essentially a brunch set consisting of scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, slices of pumpkin bread with thin slices of butter! There was nothing to dislike about this platter of delicious breakfast-y food! I thoroughly enjoyed it (:

Jeffrey opted for the Bockwurst ($16.50), which is made up of two sausages that sit atop a serving of mashed potatoes and stewed cabbage. He commented that the sausages were pretty average, which was quite shocking to me since I thought that the quality of Brotzeit's sausages is supposed to be a cut above the rest. The mashed potatoes were pretty alright but the cabbages didn't really appeal to either of us.

Finally, we chose their famouse Schokokuchen ($12.50), which consists of a chocolate lava cake of sorts and a scoop of vanilla icecream with chocolate flakes. Their chocolate lava cake didn't have thick chocolate sauce that oozed out upon cutting but the chocolate sauce was thick and sufficiently fluid. I certainly didn't regret choosing this dessert!

In all, I think Brotzeit's a great place to dine, especially when it's not crowded because service is prompt and good. I think the waiters and waitresses are extremely attentive: they make it a point to refill your glasses of water when necessary and they try to serve you your food as quickly as possible. We thoroughly enjoyed dining at Brotzeit and we'll definitely go back again in future (:

Have a great weekend everyone!
